Originally called Good Ground, Hampton Bays has more waterfront property than any of the other Hamptons making it the perfect place to purchase waterfront homes for sale in the Hamptons.

Hampton Bays is also a fisherman's paradise as it is the second largest fishing port in New York state (second to Montauk). Popular fishing activities include: sport fishing, deep sea fishing, and spear fishing.

One of the defining characteristics of Hampton Bays is the Shinnecock Canal which allows for easy access to either the Peconic Bay or the Atlantic Ocean. The canal was originally dug by Native Americans by hand back in the seventeenth century and was modernized in 1919.

While the town has a variety of beaches, one of the most popular ones is Ponquogue Beach. The beach recently updated with a new pavilion and offers bathrooms, showers, changing rooms and a concession stand.

One of the area's more family-friendly beaches is Meschutt Beach located on the Peconic Bay. Since it is a bay beach, the water is calm and there are little to no waves making it perfect for families with small children. There is also a nearby restaurant making it easy to spend the entire day there.

Hampton Bays was originally called Good Ground as according to Native Americans, the soil was so good that it grew almost anything. The town changed it named to Hamptons Bays in order to capitalize on the growing popularity of the Hamptons.
